The state of connectivity in Mexico 2024

The deployment of 5G in Mexico began in February 2022 in the 18 main cities, thanks to a strong investment in infrastructure by the two main operators in the country, which at that time led the country to have one of the highest adoption rates highest in the region. Currently, in Mexico there are 6.6 million subscribers in 125 cities. Sources such as the Ericsson Mobility Report estimate that by the end of 2024 there will be an acceleration in the adoption of the 5G network, reaching up to 51% of all mobile subscriptions.

From a regional perspective, Mexico is the second market in user volume and represents 23.6% of the region’s subscriptions with a potential market of 120 million subscribers, only smaller than Brazil. In parallel with consumer adoption trends, the development of enterprise connectivity and its business applications is accelerating due to international trade and supply chain relationships. In the current international economic context, Mexico stands out as one of the main global beneficiaries of the “nearshoring” phenomenon.

This economic phenomenon is becoming a catalyst for technological updates in all industries, which need to maintain the connectivity standards required by the international supply chains of their American and Canadian partners. This process will quickly permeate other industries such as logistics, electronic commerce, emergency services, and potentially improve the military capabilities of the Mexican State. According to State of Connectivity 2024, more than 70% of all Mexican companies surveyed stated that they plan to adopt 5G technology for their operations in 2024, in part due to this international pressure.

The data from this survey also demonstrates that, following the emergence of generative AI and its exploratory applications during 2023, cybersecurity must be at the forefront of organizations’ digital planning and implementation. However, many Mexican business decision makers are not familiar with the latest ‘cybersecurity 2.0’ standards, more related to the management of secure and intelligent networks than to traditional firewall schemes, which could explain why less than 40% of companies in Mexico use ‘Zero Trust’ type network access, and the use of the SASE (Secure Access)
